Wheaton's five-goal second half the difference in 6-1 win over Emmanuel
NORTON, Mass. - After scoring once through the first half, the Wheaton College women's soccer team exploded for four goals in just under 12 minutes of the second stanza en route to a 6-1 victory over non-league foe Emmanuel College during its home opener on Tuesday at Mirrione Stadium.
Extending their unbeaten streak in home openers to 19 seasons, the Lyons, who are receiving national votes and ranked fourth in New England in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) polls, remained undefeated at 3-0. The Saints suffered their third loss in four games.
Sophomore Cassey Muse (Candia, N.H./Central) scored twice, tallying the game-winner from senior Emily Hough (Norwich, Vt./Hanover) 3:07 into the second half, while freshman Rebecca Raymond (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) contributed a goal and two helpers. Hough notched her first goal of the season to go alongside her assist. Senior Lauren Caney (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield) and junior Jessica Stuart (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) also found the back of the net.
In goal for the Lyons, junior Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, R.I./Wheeler School) made three saves in 63:35 for the win, while freshman goalie Kerry Condon (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson Regional) had one stop the rest of the way.
Freshman Lindsey Garvey (Warwick, R.I./Warwick Memorial) scored for the Saints, and sophomore Jessica D'Ottavio (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) notched seven saves in net.
Caney finished off a short cross from Raymond at 29:16 to open the scoring before Hough connected with Muse at 48:07. Garvey slashed Emmanuel's deficit in half not even a minute later, but the hosts answered with three consecutive tallies during 8:34 to put the game out of reach. Raymond had a hand in two of those goals.
