BABSON PARK, Mass. - Wheaton College women's soccer senior Colleen Liffers' (Merrimac, Mass./Pentucket Regional) 47th-minute tally proved to be the difference at Babson College, as the Lyons handed the Beavers their first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) loss on Tuesday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
Ranked seventh in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), Wheaton's 1-0 victory stopped a three-game winless stretch. The Lyons improved to 12-3-2 on the season and 4-3 in conference action, while Babson fell to 10-4-1 and 5-1-1.
Liffers and fellow senior captain Alessia Viscomi (Newton, Mass./Newton North) teamed up for a goal for the second straight game, while junior keeper Erin Cawley (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield) earned her second career shutout with seven stops.
The Wheaton defense held strong throughout, especially in the first half when the Lyons allowed just three shots while taking 13. The visitors finished with a 22-13 advantage and took four of the game's five corner kicks.
Babson junior goalie Lisa Wojnar (Bellaire, Texas/Episcopal) was credited with 10 stops in the loss, including keeping Liffers off the board with a diving catch on a hard-hit shot in the seventh minute.
Wheaton's goal 1:40 into the second half began on a restart taken by Viscomi just outside the center of the box. After having her free kick blocked, Viscomi picked up the loose ball, dribbled to the right side and lofted a high shot that was saved by Wojnar. Liffers collected the rebound and drove her shot inside the left post.
The Lyons have two conference games remaining, beginning with Saturday's home match against Smith College at 2:00 p.m.
