NORTON, Mass. – Wheaton College women's soccer sophomore Joy-Marie Fernandes (Woburn, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon School) has been named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Offensive Player of the Week.
Fernandes scores three goals in two matches last week for the Lyons (1-0-1). She began the week by scoring a pair of goals – including one on a penalty kick – in a 3-2 win over Roger Williams University on Thursday. Two days later, she tallied her third goal of the season in a 2-2 tie with Worcester State.
Fernandes – who has already surpassed her goal total for all of 2010 and equaled her point production - is tied for the NEWMAC lead in both goals and points.
"This is a good start to Joy-Marie's sophomore campaign," said head coach Luis Reis. "She proved to us in Barcelona and during our spring season that she is capable of scoring."
Last season, Colleen Liffers (Sept. 13) and Emily Hough (Nov. 1) earned Player of the Week honors for Wheaton.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday, Sept. 10 when they travel to Boston for a 1 p.m. match with Suffolk.
