BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Cassey Muse (Candia, N.H./Central) and sophomore Joy-Marie Fernandes (Woburn, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon School) each scored goals and senior Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, R.I./Wheeler School) made four saves as the Wheaton College women's soccer team posted a 2-0 win at Suffolk University in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.
Fernandez – the reigning New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Offensive Player of the Week – staked the Lyons (2-0-1) to a 1-0 lead when she hooked a corner kick into the back of the net at 24:30. The goal was her team-leading fourth of the season.
In the second half, Muse poked a pass from senior Emily Vincunas (Granville, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy) into the back of the net for her third of the season at 56:00.
The Lyons outshot the Rams 24-9 on the afternoon and received nine corner kicks, compared to two for the Rams (2-1-0). Freshman Melissa Brouillette (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) was credited with 13 saves in the loss.
"We were sluggish and we were not sharp," said Wheaton head coach Luis Reis. "This wasn't our best day. We'll take the win and move on to tomorrow's match."
The Lyons return to action on Sunday when they host Williams at noon. The Rams travel to St. Joseph's (Me.) for a 4 p.m. match on Wednesday.
