Corigliano's three points send Lyons past Smith, 5-0

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Freshman Lauren Corigliano (Roselle Park, N.J./Roselle Park) recorded a goal and an assist in Wheaton College's 5-0 win at Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action Saturday afternoon.

Juniors Tara Caney (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield) and Samantha Bennett (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) each scored their first goals of the season for the Lyons, who improved to 12-2-3 (6-1-1 NEWMAC) on the season and 10-1-2 in their last 13 matches. The loss drops the Pioneers to 2-11-0 (1-7-0 NEWMAC).

Sophomore Joy-Marie Fernandes (Woburn, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon School) opened the scoring 91 seconds into the match with her fifth goal of the season. A foul just on the edge of the penalty area gave Wheaton a free-kick, and Fernandes curled the ball past a diving senior goalkeeper Lindsey Gregor (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast) for a 1-0 lead.

Caney made it 2-0 when she controlled the ball following a defensive miscue and beat Gregor with an unassisted goal at the 18:48 mark. Corigliano increased the lead to 3-0 when she headed home a corner from sophomore Kaitlyn Mawicke (Trumbull, Conn./Notre Dame Catholic) with 24:51 on the clock.

Corigliano set up Bennett for the fourth goal of the half at 32:40 to give Wheaton a 4-0 lead heading into halftime. The Pioneers' best chance to get on the scoreboard in the opening half came with 10 minutes played, but senior Ellie Theurer's (Gainesville, Fla./Oak Hill) shot was wrapped up by senior goalkeeper Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, R.I./Wheeler School.

Wheaton capped the scoring with 1:25 left in the match when freshman Shelby Benoit (Easthampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) headed home a cross from classmate Myra Parsonnet (Norwich, Vt./Kimball Union Academy).

Leddy made four saves in 75 minutes of action to earn her 11th win of the season. Gregor finished with eight saves for Smith, which was eliminated from playoff contention with the loss. The Lyons finished with a 20-7 edge in shots.

The Lyons return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Keene State for a 7 p.m. match. Smith plays at Fitchburg State Tuesday at 7 p.m.
