KEENE, N.H. – Sophomore Joy-Marie Fernandes (Woburn, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon School) scored her sixth goal of the season 15 minutes into the match and senior Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, R.I./Wheeler School) made five saves to lead the Wheaton College women's soccer team to a 1-0 win at Keene State College in non-conference women's soccer action Tuesday night.
Ranked fourth in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) - New England Region poll, the Lyons improved to 13-2-3 on the season and 11-1-2 in their last 14 matches. The loss drops Keene State to 12-7.
Wheaton scored the only goal of the match at 15:15 when Fernandes knocked in a cross from junior Cassey Muse (Candia, N.H./Central). Fernandes has now scored in consecutive matches for the first time since the second and third matches of the season.
Leddy made two saves in the first half and three in the second to earn her 12th win and 10th shutout of the season, the latter of which ties her career-high set in 2008. The 10 shutouts is also the fourth-highest single-season total in school history.
Senior Megan Dempsey (East Weymouth, Mass./East Weymouth) recorded four saves for the Owls.
The Lyons return to action on Thursday when they travel to Salem State for a 7 p.m. match. Keene State caps its regular season at Western Connecticut State Saturday at 4 p.m.
