Mawicke, Leddy help Lyons fight off Vikings, 1-0

SALEM, Mass. - Senior Kaitlyn Mawicke (Trumbull, Conn./Notre Dame Catholic) scored her fifth goal of the season early in the first half and senior Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, R.I./Wheeler School) recorded six saves in Wheaton College's 1-0 win at Salem State in non-conference action women's soccer action Thursday night at a rainy Alumni Field.

Ranked fourth in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) - New England Region poll, the Lyons improved to 14-2-3 on the season and 12-1-2 in their last 14 matches. The loss drops Salem State to 6-7-3.

Mawicke potted the only goal of the match at 14:24 when she sent a low corner kick through the box that found its way inside the far post.

Salem State outshot the Lyons 12-6 on the evening, but the visitors held a 5-0 edge in corner kicks. Senior Leah Potcner (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) started in goal for the Vikings and recorded two saves.

The shutout was Leddy's 10th of the season, moving her into a fourth-place tie on Wheaton's single-season record list.

The Lyons wrap up their regular season on Saturday with a 2 p.m. match with New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Coast Guard. Prior to the match, Wheaton will honor its eight seniors. Salem State plays at Mass. Maritime Academy Saturday at noon.
