Six Wheaton student-athletes earn academic all-conference laurels
NORTON, MA- Six Wheaton College student-athletes were named to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Academic All-Conference teams for the winter of 2009-10.
Student-athletes receiving the award must maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or better upon completion of the 2009 fall semester, attain at least a sophomore year standing and be a competing member of a varsity team for the entire season. Five athletes represented the women's swimming & diving team for the second straight year, as the program has produced at least three academic all-conference honorees for eight consecutive years.
Senior co-captain Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) became the eighth Lyon to earn three academic all-league honors, while juniors Kathleen Dwyer (Barrington, RI/Barrington), Sara Hollar (La Crescenta, CA/Flintridge Prep) and Stephany Perkins (Monmouth, ME/Monmouth Academy) each drew their second nod. Sophomore diver Alexandra Wilson (Suffield, CT/Suffield) qualified for her initial award. The five helped Wheaton take third at the NEWMAC Championship, matching the best finish in program history for the third straight year.
Senior Stephanie Michals (Fairfax, VA/Saint Stephen's & Saint Agnes School) became the third women's basketball player to land three academic all-conference laurels, as the fourth-year Lyon helped Wheaton qualify for the NEWMAC Tournament semifinals each winter of her career. While appearing in all 27 games this season, Michals set career highs in nearly every category, including points, rebounds and assists. Wheaton finished 16-11 overall and 12-6 in the league before drawing the tournament's fourth seed and falling in the semifinals.
Winter sports sponsored by the NEWMAC include men's and women's basketball, and men's and women's swimming & diving.
