CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Seven NCAA national meet provisional qualifying standards and four school records highlighted the two-day Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Invitational for the Wheaton College men's and women's swimming & diving teams, as each squad finished competition in fourth place on Saturday at Zesiger Pool.
The Lyon women compiled 508 points among seven competing teams, while the men scored 368.16 points out of six squads. MIT claimed both team titles.
Seniors Dania Piscetta (Belmont, N.H./Belmont) and Nicole Zais (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) each played a part of four NCAA cuts, while freshman Adrianne Madden (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) contributed to three. Piscetta had a hand in four school records, as the women combined to capture six event triumphs.
The women were impressive during the weekend's freestyle events, with Piscetta winning the 50- and 100-yard races with NCAA provisional times and program marks of 23.81 and 52.38, respectively. Madden was the runner up in the 50 free in 23.99, also good for a provisional time. On Saturday, Piscetta improved her 50 free time during a timed trial in which she finished in 23.74.
The trio swam legs on the victorious 200- and 400-yard free relay teams, which met NCAA cuts. Joining senior Stephany Perkins (Monmouth, Maine/Monmouth Academy) on each, the Lyons notched times of 1:35.61 during the 200 free relay and a school-record 3:33.38 in the 400 free relay.
Zais swept the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke competitions with provisional marks of 1:05.98 and 2:23.14, respectively. Madden, Piscetta and Zais also sided with sophomore Dana Auger (Milford, Mass./Milford) for the second-fastest time in the 200-yard medley relay, as the quartet clocked in at 1:48.28, which was a program record and 0.28 ticks short of a provisional standard.
Piscetta placed second in the 100-yard butterfly and joined Madden, Perkins and Zais on the third-place 400-yard medley relay team. Zais came in fourth during the 50-yard free race.
Freshman Charlie Maier (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) took the runner-up spot for the men during the one-meter dive while placing third in the three-meter event. Senior Jonathan Gold (West Harrison, N.Y./Fordham Prep) took fifth off the three-meter platform and sixth during the one-meter event.
Seniors Zach Fichman-Klein (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) and Ben Sabol (Saint Petersburg, Fla./Shorecrest Prep), sophomore Sam Neill (Ludlow, Mass./Belchertown) and freshman Emerson Jenkins (Kansas City, Mo./Pembroke Hill School) rounded out the top-five finishes by taking fifth in the 200-yard medley relay.
Sabol turned in a sixth-place mark during the 100-yard backstroke while siding with Fichman-Klein, Jenkins and Neill on the sixth-place 400-yard medley relay team.
Wheaton's next meet isn't until 2011, when the Lyons host MIT on Thursday, January 6, at 5:00 p.m.
