SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming & diving teams swept Friday night's competition against New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) schools Clark University and Mount Holyoke College at Mount Holyoke Natatorium.
The men notched a 175-118 triumph over Clark in picking up their first victory of the season, while the women recorded 153-142 and 162-130 wins against the Cougars and hosts, respectively, improving their season record to 5-3.
With freshman Adrianne Madden (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) leading the way, Wheaton earned first-place finishes in six of the 16 events. After teaming with junior Taryn Brosnan (Westford, Mass./Academy of Notre Dame) and Sarah Miller (Madison, N.J./Madison) and sophomore Dana Auger (Milford, Mass./Milford) to win the 200-yard medley relay (1:55.67), she took top honors in both the 100-yard freestyle (55.65) and 100-yard butterfly (1:02.49) events.
Miller went on to grab top honors in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:54.85) along with seniors Stephany Perkins (Monmouth, Maine/Monmouth Academy) and Alisha Wilson (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) and sophomore Elle Van Cott (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central). Meanwhile, senior Nicole Zais (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) added individual wins in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.72) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.52).
Senior Zach Fichman-Klein (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) and freshmen Emerson Jenkins (Kansas City, Mo./Pembroke Hill School) and Charlie Maier (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) claimed two victories apiece to set the tone for the Lyons. Fichman-Klein's wins came in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.90) and the 100-yard butterfly (55.08). Meanwhile, Jenkins figured in on his team's triumph in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:23.54) and touched the wall first in the 50-yard freestyle (22.93).
The Lyons are back in action tomorrow afternoon in Hartford, Connecticut, where they will take on Connecticut College and host Trinity College in a double-dual meet at 1:00 p.m.
