NORTON, Mass. The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming & diving teams returned home on Wednesday and swept New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Balfour Natatorium.
The men posted a 137-102 victory to improve to 2-8 overall, while the women, who entered today's action ranked 22nd nationally by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), were equally impressive with a 142-99 triumph in moving to 7-4.
Freshman Charlie Maier (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) continued to impress off the diving platforms, sweeping both the one- and three-meter events while breaking his own school record in the three-meter competition with 268.12 points. He also scored 210.37 points off the one-meter springboard.
Seniors Sam Dean-Lee (Rocky Hill, Conn./Xavier), Zach Fichman-Klein (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) and Ben Sabol (Saint Petersburg, Fla./Shorecrest Prep) each won an individual event while swimming legs on the victorious 400-yard medley relay team.
Dean-Lee touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.04, Fichman-Klein recorded the top time in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.90, while Sabol emerged victorious during the 100-yard backstroke in 55.55. The trio joined freshman Emerson Jenkins (Kansas City, Mo./Pembroke Hill School) for a time of 3:48.45 in the relay.
For the women, junior Sarah Miller (Madison, N.J./Madison) earned a trio of wins, including finishing in 2:05.85 during the 200-yard freestyle race. She also had a hand in both the victorious 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay events that finished in 1:43.42 and 4:21.75, respectively.
Swimming alongside Miller in the 200-yard free relay were senior Nicole Zais (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional), sophomore Dana Auger (Milford, Mass./Milford) and freshman Rachel Brown (Westport, Mass./Bishop Stang). Joining Miller during the 400-yard medley relay were seniors Sara Hollar (La Crescenta, Calif./Flintridge Prep) and Dania Piscetta (Belmont, N.H./Belmont) and sophomore Elle Van Cott (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central).
Piscetta won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:14.73, Hollar captured the top time in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:02.89, while Zais bested the 100-yard breaststroke field in 1:08.24.
Rounding out the events wins came from seniors Emma Chaiken (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) and Stephany Perkins (Monmouth, Maine/Monmouth Academy) in the three-meter diving and 50-yard free events, respectively, and junior Alexandra Wilson (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) in the one-meter dive. Chaiken scored 225.37 points, Perkins swam in 25.83, while Wilson had 192.60 points.
Wheaton remains at home to face league opponent Babson College on Saturday, when the Lyons will celebrate Senior Day beginning at 12:30 p.m.
