Lyons match program wins record with shutout against Sweet Briar
HILTON HEAD, SC- The Wheaton College women's tennis team matched the program record for victories in a season while extending its winning streak to seven matches following Monday's 9-0 triumph over Sweet Briar College of Virginia to begin its southern trip.
The Lyons, who are ranked 10th regionally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), improved to 14-2 on the season, while the Vixens fell to 4-3.
Junior Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) picked up her 100th career victory with today's doubles and singles wins. After dropping her first set at second singles, she responded with scores of 6-0 and 10-4 to complete the comeback victory. In doubles action, Geocaris and junior Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) won 8-3 at one.
Senior Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) and sophomore Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, RI/Lincoln School) surrendered just one game at second doubles, while junior Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex Regional) and sophomore Rosalyn Chesky (South Hadley, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) combined for an 8-3 triumph at three.
DiOrio, Knies and Chesky blanked their singles opponents in the fourth, fifth and sixth slots, respectively. Teague yielded just one game in the top position, while Van Faasen completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at three.
The Lyons turn back around tomorrow to face regionally-ranked Ithaca College at 1:30 p.m. The Bombers are 14th in the most recent ITA Northeast poll.
