Wheaton notches school-record 15th victory of season, downs Ithaca, 6-3
HILTON HEAD, SC- The Wheaton College women's tennis team set a school record with its 15th victory of the school year, extending its win streak to eight matches with a 6-3 triumph over Ithaca College on Tuesday in a match between a pair of regionally-ranked teams. The Lyons, now 15-2, are 10th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast region poll, while the Bombers are 20th and slipped to 11-3.
The Blue and White won twice during doubles while also suffering a narrow setback. Juniors Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) earned an 8-3 win in the first spot, while classmate Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex Regional) and sophomore Rosalyn Chesky (South Hadley, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) picked up an 8-6 victory at three.
In the second position, senior Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) and sophomore Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, RI/Lincoln School) suffered a close 9-8 loss.
Four Lyons won in straight sets during singles to clinch their team's victory. Geocaris notched a 6-0, 7-5 triumph at two, while DiOrio won both of her sets by 7-5 counts in the fourth position. Knies earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory at five, while Chesky rounded out the singles winners by taking a 6-2, 6-2 decision at six.
The Lyons finish off their three-match spring break swing against nationally-ranked Denison University tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. Denison is ranked fifth in Division III by the ITA and sits second in the Central region poll.
