Knies posts pair of shutout victories, Lyons sweep past Dutchwomen
NORTON, MA- Senior captain Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) played a role in a pair of shutout victories on Sunday, helping the regionally-ranked Wheaton College women's tennis team to a 9-0 victory against Union College in Beard Field House.
The Lyons, who sit 12th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Northeast poll, improved to 6-1 on the fall, while the New York-based Dutchwomen slipped to 2-2. Wheaton now holds a 5-0 advantage in the all-time series.
Knies began the day by siding with sophomore Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, RI/Lincoln School) for an 8-0 triumph at second doubles before picking up a 6-0, 6-0 win in the fifth singles position. DiOrio nearly followed suit, earning a 6-1, 6-0 win at four.
Juniors Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) doubled up their doubles foes, 8-4 in the first spot, while classmate Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex Regional) and sophomore Rosalyn Chesky (South Hadley, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) won by an 8-2 count at three.
During singles, Geocaris and Teague each yielded only two games in the first and second spots, respectively, while Van Faasen picked up a 6-1, 6-4 win in the third position. Chesky recorded an 8-1 triumph in a sixth-slot pro set.
Wheaton entertains nationally-ranked Wellesley College, the five-time defending New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament champion, in Norton on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. The Blue stands 20th in the latest ITA poll.
