Chesky and Van Faasen earn league doubles award, Geocaris also honored
NORTON, MA- Wheaton College women's tennis junior Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex Regional) and sophomore Rosalyn Chesky (South Hadley, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) were selected New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Doubles Team of the Week, while junior Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) earned singles honors for the week ending on Sunday, September 27.
Chesky and Van Faasen picked up doubles laurels for the first time in their careers, while Geocaris, who is ranked 22nd in the Northeast by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), was named singles player of the week for the second time.
The duo went 3-0 last week from the third position, helping the regionally-ranked Lyons to a perfect mark. Notching an 8-1 win against a Springfield College tandem on Saturday after earning an 8-2 victory over a pair from defending The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Tournament champion Endicott College on Wednesday, Chesky and Van Faasen closed the week with an 8-2 win over Union College on Sunday.
Geocaris also went 3-0 from the top singles position, yielding a total of six games on the week, including picking up a 6-1, 6-2 conference win over Springfield. She also tallied a 6-0, 6-1 triumph against Endicott and a 6-1, 6-1 victory over a Union opponent.
Riding a four-match winning streak, the Lyons, who are ranked 12th in the Northeast, are 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the NEWMAC. They face their stiffest challenge of the season with Tuesday's home match against nationally-ranked Wellesley College at 4:00 p.m. Wellesley is the five-time defending NEWMAC Tournament champion and is ranked 20th in the country.
