Engineers double up Lyons, 6-3
NORTON, Mass. – The MIT women's tennis team defeated Wheaton College 6-3 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Tuesday afternoon at the Clark Tennis Courts.
The Engineers won all three doubles matches and split the six singles contests to improve to 6-2 overall and 6-1 in the NEWMAC. The Lyons slip to 7-3 (4-3 NEWMAC) with the loss but secure the No. 4 seed in next week's conference tournament. They will host No. 5 Mount Holyoke on Wednesday, October 19.
Wheaton sophomore Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Regional) defeated freshman Michelle Dutt (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) in straight sets at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-0, to earn the Lyons first point of the afternoon.
At No. 3 singles, Lyons senior captain Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, R.I./Lincoln School) scored a 7-5, 5-7, 10-7 win over sophomore Julia Hsu (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut). Junior Jesse Boggis (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) was also victorious for the Lyons as she knocked off senior Hillary Jenny (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) at No. 6 singles, 7-5, 6-4, in the final match of the evening.
Senior Alexandria Hall (Hemet, Calif./Hemet) defeated sophomore Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen) 6-1, 6-3 to win the No. 5 singles match.
In doubles, Cooke and Marlowe were upended by Quisenberry and Hsu, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. DiOrio and Crom fell to Duff and Kong at No. 2 doubles, 8-1, and Bell and Boggis took an 8-4 loss at No. 3 doubles to Hall and Jenny.
Both Wheaton and MIT will compete at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) this weekend at Amherst College in Amherst, Mass.
