No. 4 Lyons host No. 5 Mount Holyoke in NEWMAC Quarterfinal
NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's tennis team has earned the No. 4 seed in the 2011 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament and will host No. 5 Mount Holyoke on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 3 p.m. at Beard Field House.
The two-time defending champion Lyons finished the regular season 7-3 overall and 4-3 in the NEWMAC. The fourth and final conference win for Wheaton was an 8-1 triumph over the Lyons this past Saturday, a match in which Wheaton captured all six singles points.
Wheaton is led by sophomore and No. 1 singles student-athlete Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian), who boasts a 10-2 overall singles record this fall - including a 9-1 mark at No. 1 singles – and a 7-4 record at No. 1 doubles with freshman teammate Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View). The pair was named NEWMAC Doubles Team of the Week on Monday.
Marlowe solidified the No. 2 singles slot for head coach Lynn Miller this fall, going 7-4 in her first season of collegiate competition (7-3 No. 2 singles). Senior captain Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, R.I./Lincoln School) rolled to a 9-1 mark playing No. 3 singles in the Lyons lineup.
Mount Holyoke finished 4-6 this fall and 3-4 in the NEWMAC. Sophomore AnnElizabeth Konkel (Camp Hill, Pa./Harrisburg Academy) led the Lyons with six singles wins – five of which came at No. 5 singles – while classmate Maya Sayarath (St. Johnsbury, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) was next with five wins – four coming at No. 2 singles.
In other playoff action, No. 1 Wellesley (8-1, 7-0 NEWMAC) plays the winner of the Wheaton/Mount Holyoke match at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22 while No. 2 MIT (6-2, 6-1 NEWMAC) hosts No. 3 Babson (9-2, 5-2 NEWMAC) at 3 p.m. later that afternoon. The finals will be played Sunday, Oct. 23 at Babson at 1 p.m.
