NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's tennis team won all nine of its matches on the first day of the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) at Smith College.
The Lyons No. 1 team of sophomore Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) and freshman Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) defeated junior Hillary Hoyt (New York, N.Y./Deerfield Academy) and freshman Alexandra Criss (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) of Trinity (Conn.) by a score of 3-0. Following an 8-4 win in doubles, Cooke won her singles match 8-2 while Marlowe scored an 8-0 win. The pair advances to play the No. 1 team from Middlebury Saturday morning.
Wheaton's second team of senior Allesandra DiOrio (Lincoln, R.I./Cumberland Regional) and sophomore Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen) also posted a 3-0 in their matchup with Curry's team of sophomores Emily Mongello (Milton, Mass./Plymouth North) and Megan Mulrooney (South Boston, Mass./Boston Latin). After posting an 8-6 win in doubles, DiOrio and Crom both won their singles matches by identical 8-3 scores againstand face the No. 2 team from Middlebury on Saturday.
Junior Jesse Boggis (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) and sophomore Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Pingree School) posted a 3-0 win over junior Olivia Hilton (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) and freshman Hillary Dutton (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) of Roger Williams in their matchup. Boggis won her singles match 8-0 over Hilton while Bell posted an 8-3 win against Hilton. In doubles action, the duo posted an 8-3 and advances to play Tufts tomorrow morning.
"This was a very good day for our team," said Lyons head coach Lynn Miller. "I'm not sure if we've ever defeated Trinity before, but either way, it was a successful afternoon for our players."
All six Lyons will compete in the second round of the NEWITT Saturday morning at Mount Holyoke. Action gets underway at 8:30 a.m.
