SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's tennis team completed action at the New England Women's Invitational Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) Saturday afternoon at Mount Holyoke College.
Wheaton's No. 1 team of sophomore Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) and freshman Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) defeated the No. 2 team from Middlebury College in doubles action, but dropped both singles matches. Following an 8-3 win over sophomore Dorrie Paradies (Atlanta, Ga./Woodward Academy) and freshman Katie Paradies (Atlanta, Ga./Woodward Academy) in doubles, Cooke suffered a 7-5, 6-3 loss to Dorrie and Marlowe lost 6-3, 6-2 to Katie.
The Lyons No. 2 team of senior Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, R.I./Lincoln School) and sophomore Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen) was defeated by Middlebury's No. 1 doubles team of senior Victoria Aiello (Milton, Mass./Milton Academy) and junior Leah Kepping (Northport, N.Y./Northport), 3-0. The No. 2 seed Panthers scored an 8-0 win in doubles before Aiello defeated DiOrio 6-0, 6-2 and Kepping defeated Crom by the same score.
Wheaton's No. 3 team of junior Jesse Boggis (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) and sophomore Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Gloucester) was defeated by Tufts University, 3-0. Senior Natalie Schills (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Lauren School) downed Boggis, 6-3, 6-3 and sophomore Rebecca Kimmel (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) upended Bell, 6-2, 6-4. The Jumbos also won the doubles matchup.
"The highlight of the afternoon was definitely defeating Middlebury's number two doubles team," said Lyons head coach Lynn Miller.
The Lyons return to action on Wednesday when they host Mount Holyoke in the quarterfinals of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament at 3:30 p.m.
