Two Lyons' teams advance to NEWITT second round
AMHERST, Mass.- The Wheaton College women's tennis team kicked off the three-day New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) at Amherst College on Friday with two of its teams advancing to tomorrow's second round.
Juniors Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Pingree School) and Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen) defeated a duo from New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) school Mount Holyoke College, 2-1.
Bell and Crom blanked the Mount Holyoke twosome during doubles action, while Crom yielded three games during her singles victory. Bell lost in three sets, falling by a count of 3-6, 6-1 and 5-10.
Senior Jesse Boggis (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) and freshman Caroline DiNicola-Fawley (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) also won 2-1, as they knocked off a league foe Springfield College pair.
Dropping a hard-fought doubles decision in a tiebreaker, Boggis and DiNicola-Fawley took care of business in singles play. DiNicola-Fawley posted a 6-3, 6-1 triumph, while Boggis cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
In other action, junior Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) and sophomore Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) ran up against the tournament's fifth-seeded team from host Amherst.
Getting swept by the Lord Jeff duo, Cooke and Marlowe dropped an 8-1 doubles decision. In singles play, Cooke suffered a 6-1, 6-1 setback, while Marlowe fell 6-2, 6-0.
