Wellesley Ends Wheaton’s Winning Streak, 6-3
Lyons drop first match of season
NORTON, Mass. – The Wellesley College women's tennis team handed Wheaton College its first loss in the Lyons 2013-14 campaign on Tuesday night at Clark Tennis Courts by a 6-3 score in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.
Wheaton claimed all three of its victories in singles play as junior co-captain Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View), senior co-captain Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) and freshman Amanda Brazell (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) kept their perfect records intact on the hardcourt.
Marlowe turned in a 2-6, 7-5, 10-5 triumph over Wellesley junior Sojung Lee (Seoul Korea/The Lawrenceville School) at No.1, while Cooke bested freshman Carina Chen (Hong Kong/Hong Kong International) by a 7-5, 6-0 score at No.2. Cooke trailed in the first set 2-5, but responded by winning 14-straight games to earn the eventual victory.
Brazell also notched a come-from-behind win against freshman Lina Ye (Milpitas, Calif./Milpitas) at No.4 singles bouncing back from a 2-6 deficit in set one with scores of 6-1 and 12-10. So far this season, Cooke is 6-0 at No.2 singles, Marlowe is 7-0 at No.1 and Brazell is 7-0 overall in singles play with a 1-0 mark at No.3 and 6-0 record at No.4.
The duo of Cooke and Marlowe fell to Lee and Chen at No.1 doubles, 8-6, while Brazell and senior Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Pingree School) lost to Wellesley freshman Andjela Stojkovic (Victoria, B.C./Brentwood College) 8-3 at No.2.
Wellesley's No.3 doubles pairing of senior Kendall Tada (Hilo, Hawaii/Hilo) and freshman Samantha Stone (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) topped Wheaton sophomore Izzy Gorham (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) and senior Jessica Moore (Middletown, R.I./The Prout School) 8-3.
Stojkovic, Stone and Tada finished the night as double-winners registering victories at No.3, No.5 and No.6 singles, respectively.
Wheaton (6-1, 4-1 NEWMAC) hosts MIT on Saturday, October 5 at the Clark Tennis Courts beginning at 1 p.m. Wellesley (5-2, 4-1 NEWMAC) travels to Babson College on Saturday for an 11 a.m. start time. Both matches are NEWMAC contests this coming Saturday.
