Wheaton improves to 4-2 in conference play
BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's tennis team bounced back from consecutive losses over the last week with a key 6-3 victory against New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Babson College on Tuesday evening at Farwell Courts.
Wheaton jumped out to a pivotal 2-1 advantage in doubles play as co-captains Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) and Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) posted an 8-1 decision over Babson junior Alex Freeman (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) and freshman Dina Weick (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity) at No.1.
At No.3 doubles, Lyons' seniors Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen) and Jessica Moore (Middletown, R.I./The Prout School) turned away Sarah Whitaker (Dellwood, Minn./St. Paul Academy) and Sarah Calmas (Chestnut Hill, Mass./Brimmer & May School) by an 8-4 score.
Marlowe continued her undefeated run at No.1 singles this season with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph against Freeman, while Cooke breezed to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Weick at No.2. Marlowe is currently 9-0 at the No.1 position for the Lyons.
Freshman Amanda Brazell (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) bounced back after losing at No.2 doubles with teammate Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Pingree School) with a 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 win against Babson junior Alexis Ferraro (Coral Gables, Fla./Palmer Trinity) at No.4 singles.
Wheaton sophomore Caroline DiNicola-Fawley (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) notched the Lyons' final win of the evening at No.6 with a 6-4, 6-2 decision against Calmas.
The Lyons (7-2, 5-2 NEWMAC) hosts Clark University in a NEWMAC clash on Saturday, October 12 at the Clark Tennis Courts at 1 p.m. Babson (6-5, 3-3 NEWMAC) travels to Clark University tomorrow for a 5 p.m. match.
