Women’s Tennis Wraps Up Play At NEWITT’s
Lyons set focus on NEWMAC Tournament this coming Wednesday
NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's tennis team closed out play on day two of the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) on Saturday afternoon with a 2-5 record overall. The tournament was split between two sites at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass. and also at Amherst College in Amherst, Mass.
Senior Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen) and sophomore Izzy Gorham (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) went 1-2 overall against Brandeis University after advancing in their draw with a 3-0 record yesterday evening. Crom claimed Wheaton's lone win in the matchup defeating senior Roberta Bergstein (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) by a 7-5, 6-2 score. Gorham dropped her match versus sophomore Sarita Biswas (Bedford, Mass./Bedford), 6-3, 6-3, while the Lyons fell to the Judges, 8-5, in the doubles portion of the pairing.
Senior Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Pingree School) and freshman Amanda Brazell (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) went 1-2 against the MIT duo of senior Julia Hsu (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut) and junior Vynnie Kong (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) in their consolation round bracket. Bell earned a win in her match with Kong via default after falling to the Engineers in a tightly contests doubles matchup, 8-5. Brazell was bested by Hsu, 6-1, 6-4 in their singles draw.
Sophomores Gracie Stark (Studio City, Calif./Highland Hall) and Caroline DiNicola-Fawley (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) went 0-3 in their consolation round versus Roger Williams freshman Emma Limburg (New London, N.H./Proctor Academy) and sophomore Adriana Maconochie (Easton, Conn./Joel Barlow).
Wheaton (9-2, 6-2 NEWMAC) hosts Springfield College in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament quarterfinal round on Wednesday, October 23 at 3 p.m.
