Lyons conclude fall season at 10-3 overall
WELLESLEY, Mass. – Second-seeded Wellesley posted a 5-0 win over third-seeded Wheaton in the semifinals of the 2013 New England Women's and Men's Atheltic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Tennis Championships on Saturday at Wellesley. The Blue advance to tomorrow's championship and will face top-seeded MIT, which captured a 5-0 over Babson earlier today.
Wellesley grabbed the early momentum by sweeping doubles play. Wellesley's second doubles team of Andjela Stojkovic (Victoria, British Columbia/Brentwood College) and Lina Ye (Milpitas, Calif./Milpitas) got the first point of the day, an 8-1 win over senior Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Pingree School) and Amanda Brazell (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School).
The Blue's Kendall Tada (Hilo, Hawaii/Hilo) and Samantha Stone (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) pushed the lead to 2-0 with an 8-4 win at third doubles, topping seniors Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen) and Jessica Moore (Middletown, R.I./The Prout School).
The closest doubles match came at one, where Wellesley's Sojung Lee (Seoul, Korea/The Lawrenceville School) and Carina Chen (Hong Kong/Hong Kong International) pulled out an 8-5 win over junior Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) and senior Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian). Lee and Chen were behind 4-3, and then won five out of the final six games for the victory.
In singles, Wellesley grabbed an early point at five, where Stone was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Crom, making it 4-0 in team scoring. Needing just one more match to advance to the finals, Wellesley got its fifth team point from Stojkovic, who won 6-1, 6-0, at number three over Bell.
When the match was decided, Wellesley was leading at one and six, while Wheaton held an edge at two and four.
The NEWMAC Women's Tennis Championship will be played at Wellesley tomorrow at 1:00pm.
