Women's Tennis Blanks Northwestern (Minn.), 9-0
Cooke collects 75th career singles victory
PLANT CITY, Fla. – The Wheaton College women's tennis team improved to 2-0 on its spring break trip with a 9-0 win Northwestern (Minn.) on Monday morning at Hillsborough Community College.
Wheaton senior co-captain Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) recorded her 75th career victory with a 6-1, 6-2 decision at No. 2 singles to highlight the afternoon's slate of competition. Cooke also teamed up with junior co-captain Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) at No. 1 doubles for a quick 8-1 decision.
The rest of the Lyons' doubles lineup was equally as impressive as all three pairs only lost a combined four sets on the day. Senior Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Pingree School) and freshman Amanda Brazell (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) earned an 8-1 triumph at No. 2, while senior Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen) and freshman Michelle Trainor (Amesbury, Mass./Saint Thomas Aquinas) registered an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Marlowe breezed to a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 1 and Brazell picked up a hard-fought 6-1, 3-6, 10-6 victory at No. 3 singles. Bell made quick work of her opponent at No. 4 singles by a score of 6-0, 6-1, Crom won her No. 5 matchup in straight sets and sophomore Izzy Gorham (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) matched Crom's performance at No. 6 singles.
Wheaton (12-3) enjoys an off day tomorrow before it wraps up its spring break trip against Alfred on March 12 at 11:00 a.m. at Hillsborough Community College.
