Women's Tennis 2014 Season Preview

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's tennis team begins its 2014 season on Saturday, August 30 at home against Simmons College at 1 p.m. Here's a look at the upcoming season.

RETURNING CAST: Wheaton returns seven student-athletes to the fold in 2014 including the reigning New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Athlete of the Year, Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View). Last season, Marlowe compiled a 15-4 record in singles action including a 13-2 dual mark and 7-0 record in NEWMAC play. Marlowe also went 15-6 in doubles.

The Lyons also bring back sophomore Amanda Brazell (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) who tied for the team lead in singles wins at 18-3. Brazell, who turned in a 7-1 record in conference action, was named to the NEWMAC All-Conference second team (No. 4 singles) last year. Other notable returners include Caroline DiNicola-Fawley (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro), Kathryn Burleson (Osterville, Mass./Cape Cod Academy), Stassy Furber (Montpelier, Vt./Montpelier), Izzy Gorham (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) and Caroline Stanclift (Camden, Maine/Cushing Academy). Arielle Klopsis (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) will make her collegiate debut for the Lyons this fall.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR: The Blue and White will look to extend its season opening winning streak to 14th straight matches on Saturday, August 30 against Simmons College as the Lyons have not lost on opening day since September 9, 2000 which came against MIT, a 9-0 loss. Wheaton begins conference play on Saturday, September 6 versus Mount Holyoke at home with doubles scheduled to start at 1 p.m. The Lyons take on Babson College on October 7 at 4 p.m. and conclude their slate of home matches on October 12 versus Colby College.

YEAR IN REVIEW: Wheaton advanced to the NEWMAC semifinals for the seventh straight season before falling to Wellesley, 5-0. The Lyons pushed their streak of winning 10-plus matches to eight straight in 2013-14 with a 14-4 record overall (10-3 fall).
