Four NCAA Championship marks carry Wheaton at USATF New Englands
CAMBRIDGE, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's indoor track & field teams notched four NCAA Championship qualifying marks during Sunday's USA Track & Field (USATF) New England Championship at Harvard University's Gordon Indoor Track.
Sophomore Mickey Jusme (Providence, RI/Classical) highlighted the day with a pair of NCAA national meet qualifying marks, including recording an automatic standard and first-place leap of 18' 8 1/2" in the long jump. Coming into last week, that distance would have tied for the second longest among all Division III female athletes this year. Jusme also notched a provisional standard in the triple jump, finishing fifth at 38' 2".
Junior Laurenmaria Smith (Providence, RI/Hope) came in fifth during the 60-meter dash, as did freshmen Samantha Bennett (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) and Amanda Claflin (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke) in the 400M dash and long jump, respectively.
Rounding out the top-10 finishers were junior Meagan Jennett (Charlottesville, VA/Western Albemarle) and sophomore Aliza Underhill (Corinth, ME/Central). Jennett placed seventh in the 400M, while Underhill was eighth in the shot put.
For the men, senior Howard Powell (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) and sophomore Cailean Robinson (Newton, MA/Phillips Exeter Academy) turned in NCAA Championship provisional qualifying times in the 60M hurdles and dash, respectively. Powell won the hurdles event in 8.26, and Robinson finished fourth during the dash in 6.95.
Sophomore Sheldon Allen (Dorchester, MA/Charlestown) and freshman Brandon Holmes (Highland Mills, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 60M hurdles. First-year Sam Fear (Bath, ME/North Yarmouth Academy) took fourth in the high jump, while Holmes was fifth in the event and sixth in the 200M dash.
Junior Raiyan Banaji (Mumbai, India/American School of Bombay) came in seventh in the 60M dash, as did freshman David Christensen (Springfield, MA/Commerce) in the 200M dash. Robinson and sophomore Kyle Ricci (Warwick, RI/Bishop Hendricken) placed eighth in the long jump and 400M dash, respectively.
Allen was 10th in the 200M dash, while senior Michael Latner (Torrance, CA/West) tied for 10th in the pole vault.
The Lyons return to action next weekend for the two-day All New England Championship at Boston University beginning on Friday.
