Lyons post 12th-place marks during ECAC Championship meets at Smith
NORTHAMPTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's indoor track & field teams notched a pair of 12th-place finishes during the two-day Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship that finished Saturday at fellow New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) school Smith College's Indoor Track and Tennis Facility.
Behind a pair of NCAA national meet provisional qualifying marks, one school record and an event win, the men tallied 26 points among 49 scoring teams, trailing the 10th-place squads by three points. For the women, the Lyons posted three provisional standards, one event victory and 23 points, as 43 teams scored.
Sophomore Cailean Robinson (Newton, MA/Phillips Exeter Academy) broke his own school record in the 55-meter dash during Friday's prelims, crossing the finish line in 6.36, which was 0.03 ticks faster than his personal best and 0.02 seconds shy of an automatic qualifying mark. During Saturday's finals, Robinson placed third in a provisional time of 6.38.
Senior Howard Powell (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) earned the lone individual victory for the men, picking up a provisional time of 7.68 in the 55M hurdles. Freshman Ben Miklovich (New Gloucester, ME/Gray-New Gloucester) took third in the 200M dash in 22.66, while classmate Cecil Jeffrey (Framingham, MA/Rivers School) was sixth in 22.82.
Junior Raiyan Banaji (Mumbai, India/American School of Bombay) rounded out the Blue and White's top-10 marks by placing eighth in the 55M dash in 6.59. Sophomore Miles Ketchum (South Lee, MA/Monument Mountain Regional) took 12th in the 500M race, while junior Colin Fahey (Waltham, MA/Weston) came in 14th during the 800M event.
Junior Laurenmaria Smith (Providence, RI/Hope) was victorious during the 55M dash with an NCAA Championship provisional time of 7.24. Sophomore Didine Jusme (Providence, RI/Classical) notched a provisional standard of 8.46 in the 55M hurdles, taking fifth, and twin sister Mickey Jusme (Providence, RI/Classical) went an NCAA qualifying distance of 38' 1 1/2" in the triple jump, also good for fifth.
Freshman Amanda Claflin (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke) came in fifth during the long jump with a mark of 17' 6 3/4", just 3 1/2" short of a provisional performance. Junior Meagan Jennett (Charlottesville, VA/Western Albemarle) was eighth in the 500M event in 1:21.37, sophomore Lauren Cardarelli (Cranston, RI/La Salle Academy) finished ninth during the 400M dash in 1:00.36, and freshman Samantha Bennett (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) came in 10th in the 800M run in 2:19.07.
The Lyons complete their indoor season next weekend at the two-day NCAA Championship set to begin at 9:00 a.m. on Friday at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. The official participant list will be announced on Monday.
