Women post runner-up mark, men place fourth at Springfield Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, MA- The Wheaton College women's outdoor track & field team notched a runner-up mark during Saturday's Springfield College Invitational, while the men placed fourth at Blake Track.

The women totaled 104 points in the 10-team field, trailing only the host, while the men finished with 69.5 points among eight schools.  Westfield State College claimed the men's title.

Sophomore twin sisters Didine Jusme (Providence, RI/Classical) and Mickey Jusme (Providence, RI/Classical) combined for five top-three placements, with Didine winning the 100-meter hurdles and 200M dash while taking third in the 100M race.  Mickey finished second in each the long and triple jumps.

Sophomore Lauren Cardarelli (Cranston, RI/La Salle Academy) captured the top time in the 400M dash, while freshman Samantha Bennett (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) was the runner up during the 1,500M run.  Junior Caleigh Greenwell (Warwick, RI/La Salle Academy) and sophomore Ashley Dell'Aira (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) came in third in the hammer throw and triple jump, respectively.

Freshman Amanda Claflin (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke) took fourth in the long and triple jumps, while Dell'Aira and sophomore Samantha Geasey (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth) placed fifth in the long jump and 1,500M run, respectively.  Sophomore Leah-Perle Bloomenstein (West Bloomfield, MI/Walled Lake Northern) was fifth in the shot put.

For the men, junior Raiyan Banaji (Mumbai, India/American School of Bombay) played a hand in a pair of event victories and one runner-up mark.  Banaji won the 200M dash while running a leg for a 4x100M relay team that posted an NCAA Championship provisional qualifying time of 41.37.  He was joined by seniors Mark Cimino (Danbury, CT/Danbury) and Merzudin Ibric (Revere, MA/Phillips Academy) and sophomore Cailean Robinson (Newton, MA/Phillips Exeter Academy).

Banaji also competed in the 4x400M relay race, siding with Robinson and freshmen Cecil Jeffrey (Framingham, MA/Rivers School) and Ben Miklovich (New Gloucester, ME/Gray-New Gloucester) to take second.

Sophomore Sheldon Allen (Dorchester, MA/Charlestown) rounded out Wheaton's event titles with the top time during the 110M hurdles.  Ibric and Robinson went 2-3 in the 100M dash, while Miklovich and junior Mark Williamson (Vienna, VA/James Madison) finished second and fourth, respectively, in the 200M dash.

Select athletes will attend the Penn Relays, which begins on Thursday, at the University of Pennsylvania, while both teams return to Springfield on Saturday for their respective New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship meets at 11:00 a.m.
