Two NCAA standards and three event wins carry Lyons at Northeastern
DEDHAM, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's and women's track & field teams took part in Northeastern University's non-scoring Solomon Invitational on Saturday, as the women turned in a pair of NCAA Championship provisional qualifying marks and a trio of first-place finishes.
Junior Didine Jusme (Providence, R.I./Classical) captured the 100-meter hurdles crown while running an NCAA qualifying time of 14.74. In the triple jump, classmate Ashley Dell'Aira (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) marked a provisional distance of 37' 4", good for second overall, while notching a runner-up finish in the long jump.
The 4x100M relay team, consisting of Jusme, senior Laurenmaria Smith (Providence, R.I./Hope), junior Lauren Cardarelli (Cranston, R.I./La Salle Academy) and sophomore Amanda Claflin (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke), placed first with a time of 49.61, holding off the runner-up quartet by 0.17 seconds. Freshman Mollie Lane (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) rounded out the event winners with a clearance of 5' 2 1/4" in the high jump.
Taking third was Cardarelli in the 400M dash, sophomore Sylvia Okoye (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional) during the discus and freshman Ashante Little (Seabrook, N.H./Winnacunnet) in the 400M hurdles. Junior Savannah Geasey (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth) finished fourth during her first appearance in the 3,000M steeplechase.
Senior Meagan Jennett (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) also ran the 400M hurdles, as her effort was good for fifth overall. Sophomore Naomi Hodges (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) recorded a fifth-place mark in the discus, as did freshman Meredith Scannel (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) during the 400M race.
For the men, sophomore Ben Miklovich (New Gloucester, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) placed third in the 100-meter dash, besting freshman teammate Michael Read (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) by 0.02 seconds, who finished fourth. Read also competed in the 200M dash and took fifth.
Freshman Ben Dibble (Salem, Mass./Salem) notched a third-place result in the 110M hurdles, while senior Colin Fahey (Waltham, Mass./Weston) secured seventh in the 800M run.
The Lyons head to the western side of the state next Saturday for the Springfield College Invitational.
