WENHAM, MA- The Wheaton College women's volleyball team recorded a 1-2 mark during Saturday's Gordon College Invitational at the Bennett Center. The Lyons knocked off Muhlenberg College of Pennsylvania in between two losses to 2008 NCAA Tournament teams.
Wheaton fell to Endicott College, 3-0 (12-25, 22-25, 20-25) in the opener before gutting out a 3-2 (25-22, 20-25, 22-25, 25-22, 15-5) victory over Muhlenberg. The Lyons finished the day by falling to Keene State College, 3-0 (11-25, 17-25, 21-25). Following competition, senior Lauren Kraus (Westboro, MA/Westboro) was named to the all-tournament team.
Against Endicott, sophomore Miranda Howitt (San Francisco, CA/International) totaled nine kills, while Kraus added six. Junior Becca Rose (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) turned in 19 assists, and classmate Kristen Hunt (Milford, CT/Jonathan Law) notched 17 digs.
During Wheaton's hard-fought win over Muhlenberg, a match which saw neither team win by more than five points through the first four sets, Rose matched the program's seventh-highest assist total in a single match with 55. Howitt amassed 19 kills and 15 digs, Kraus accounted for 20 kills and three blocks, and freshman Rachel Vergara (Needham, MA/Needham) finished with eight kills.
Hunt paced the back line with 24 digs, sophomore Emily Davisson (Carpinteria, CA/Laguna Blanca School) contributed 22 digs, while freshman Olanna Nissim (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) added 10 digs to go along with her six kills.
In the final match versus Keene State, Howitt and Kraus chipped in with 14 and eight kills, respectively, Rose tallied 28 assists, and Hunt posted 11 digs.
Wheaton looks to move back above .500 on Wednesday when it hosts Colby-Sawyer College in non-conference action at 7:00 p.m.
