BOSTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's volleyball team defeated Emmanuel College for the eighth time in nine series meetings, as the Lyons recorded their seventh sweep of the season during a 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-22) win in non-conference action Thursday at the Yawkey Center. Wheaton improves to 18-14, while the Saints are 16-11.
Senior Lauren Kraus (Westboro, MA/Westboro), sophomore Miranda Howitt (San Francisco, CA/International) and freshman Rachel Vergara (Needham, MA/Needham) recorded 11, 10 and nine kills, respectively, while junior Becca Rose (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) tallied 36 assists.
Sophomore Emily Davisson (Carpinteria, CA/Laguna Blanca School) led the defense with 20 digs, Howitt contributed 17, and freshman Olanna Nissim (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) added 11. Nissim also accounted for four service aces, while Kraus and Vergara posted three blocks apiece.
For the Saints, sophomore Rebecca Stanton (Quincy, MA/North Quincy) had six kills and a match-high eight blocks. Classmate Kathryne Olsen (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven) dished out 14 assists, while freshman Samantha Andazola (Queen Creek, AZ/Mountain View) finished with a team-best 20 digs.
The Lyons wrap up the regular season on Saturday with a huge New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match against host Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) at 12:00 p.m., as only the winner will qualify for next week's league tournament.
