NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's volleyball team kicked off its 2010 season in strong fashion on Thursday night, when the Lyons swept visiting Rhode Island College, 3-0 (25-8, 25-15, 25-17) in Emerson Gymnasium during each team's opener. With the victory, Wheaton has won six of its last seven home openers.
Sophomore Rachel Vergara (Needham, Mass./Needham) and freshman Lindsay Tebbetts (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) paced the Lyon offense with seven and six kills, respectively. Senior Becca Rose (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) handed out 23 assists to move into second place on the program's all-time list, while classmate Kristen Hunt (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) and junior Emily Davisson (Carpinteria, Calif./Laguna Blanca School) contributed 13 and 10 digs, respectively.
Freshman Breanna Boyer (West Greenwich, R.I./La Salle) led the Anchorwomen with six kills and four digs. Classmate Amanda Cabral (Riverside, R.I./East Providence) recorded five kills, and sophomore Jessica Ho (Providence, R.I./Classical) had five assists.
After trailing 4-1 in the opening set, the hosts reeled off 11 unanswered points and didn't look back, as Wheaton scored 13 of the final 16 points en route to a 25-8 triumph.
The Lyons again countered with a large run in the second set, stretching a 6-4 edge into a commanding 18-4 advantage. Rhode Island College hung around early in the third set, trailing 7-5 before Wheaton pulled away, as the Blue and White used a 15-7 spurt to lead 22-12.
The Lyons remain at home on Saturday for the four-team Wheaton Invitational beginning at 9:00 a.m. against Wentworth Institute of Technology. Later in the day, the Blue and White face Saint Joseph's College of Maine at 5:00 p.m. and Emerson College at 7:00 p.m.
