NORTON, Mass. - Senior Becca Rose (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) was selected to the Wheaton College Invitational all-tournament team for the second straight year, as the Lyons went 2-1 for the second time in as many seasons on Saturday in Emerson Gymnasium.
Moving to 3-1 overall, Wheaton began the day with sweeps over Wentworth Institute of Technology, 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-6) and Saint Joseph's College of Maine, 3-0 (25-14, 27-25, 25-13) before falling to defending champion Emerson College, 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 21-25, 20-25).
In the opener against Wentworth, sophomore Rachel Vergara (Needham, Mass./Needham) went for nine kills and four blocks, while Rose had 22 assists, seven digs and five service aces. Senior Kristen Hunt (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) and junior Emily Davisson (Carpinteria, Calif./Laguna Blanca School) recorded 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
During its sweep of Saint Joseph's, Vergara again led the hitters with nine kills. Sophomore Olanna Nissim (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) notched six kills, and Rose neared a double-double with 24 assists and nine digs. Davisson and Hunt turned in 16 and 13 digs, respectively, with Davisson adding a team-best four aces.
In the team's tight loss to Emerson, freshman Jackie Jones (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) recorded a double-double in her Wheaton debut, tallying 17 kills and 13 digs. Vergara contributed 11 kills, while Rose posted 30 assists and seven digs. Davisson registered 23 digs and seven aces, and Hunt finished with 11 digs.
The Lyons hit the road for the first time on Friday for the Johnson & Wales University Invitational, where they will begin the two-day tourney by facing the hosts at 4:00 p.m.
