Wheaton evens season record with road sweep at Mount Ida

NEWTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's volleyball team evened its season record at 5-5 by sweeping host Mount Ida College, 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 26-24) in a non-conference match Thursday night.  Falling to 5-3, the Mustangs had their five-match winning streak come to an end.

Lyon freshman Jackie Jones (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) and senior Kaitlyn Stokes (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury Memorial) recorded nine and seven kills, respectively, with each adding three blocks.  Senior Becca Rose (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) posted a double-double with 20 assists and 10 digs.

Classmate Kristen Hunt (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) led the back row with 20 digs, while junior Emily Davisson (Carpinteria, Calif./Laguna Blanca School) had three service aces.

For Mount Ida, senior Chelsea Darnell (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) had eight kills, junior Cody Fusco (San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco Waldorf) handed out 11 assists, and sophomore Michelle Begley (West Barnstable, Mass./West Barnstable) chipped in with 12 digs.

Tied at nine during the opening set, Wheaton pulled away with six straight points.  A Jones kill made the score 15-9 as the Lyons maintained at least a four-point lead the rest of the way.

Set two was knotted at eight before another Jones kill capped an 8-2 run for a 16-10 edge.  The Mustangs cut it to 20-15, but Wheaton responded with a 5-1 run. 

In the final set, the teams were even at 20 before four ties in the last five points transpired, ultimately resulting in the Blue and White's two-point win.

The Lyons host a tri-match on Saturday, beginning with a 12:00 p.m. meeting against New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Mount Holyoke College at 12:00 p.m.  Wheaton also plays local opponent Bridgewater State College at 4:00 p.m.
