Lyons split with Bridgewater and Mount Holyoke during home tri-match

NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's volleyball team collected its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory with a 3-2 (25-23, 25-17, 21-25, 25-27, 15-11) decision over Mount Holyoke College before falling to Bridgewater State College, 3-2 (20-25, 25-21, 16-25, 25-20, 8-15) during Saturday's tri-match at Emerson Gymnasium.

In the middle match, Bridgewater State overcame a 2-1 deficit during its 3-2 (22-25, 25-17, 22-25, 25-23, 15-11) victory against Mount Holyoke.  Wheaton is now 6-6 overall and 1-1 in the league, Mount Holyoke falls to 3-2 and 0-2, while Bridgewater State stands at 9-6.

Versus Mount Holyoke, Lyon freshman Jackie Jones (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) tied for the sixth-highest single-set kill total in school history with 27, as she hit .355 with 13 digs and three blocks.  Sophomore Rachel Vergara (Needham, Mass./Needham) and freshman Kara-Jane Walker (Needham, Mass./Needham) added seven and six kills, respectively.

Senior Becca Rose (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) handed out 46 assists, recorded four service aces and was one of three Lyons with 12 digs, while classmate Kristen Hunt's (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) 35 digs cracked Wheaton's top-10 list for single-set digs. 

Junior Emily Davisson (Carpinteria, Calif./Laguna Blanca School) and sophomore Olanna Nissim (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) notched 12 digs apiece, and freshman Morgan Herrington (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) added four blocks.

For Mount Holyoke, freshman Martina Kneifel (Oro Valley, Ariz./Canyon del Oro) posted a double-double of 15 kills and 17 digs, while sophomore Kathryn Brummer (Massapequa, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) tacked on nine kills and a team-high 29 digs.  Senior Kateryna Kuc (New Haven, Conn./Hopkins School) turned in an all-around solid showing of 30 assists, 14 digs and five aces, and classmate Rosa Marruffo (Tulsa, Okla./Bishop Kelley) had 25 digs.

Against Bridgewater State, Jones and Vergara led Wheaton's hitting attack with 10 and nine kills, respectively.  Rose finished with seven kills to go alongside 29 assists and 12 digs.  Davisson totaled 23 digs, Hunt notched 14, while senior Kaitlyn Stokes (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury Memorial) added six kills and four blocks.

For the Bears, senior Julie Clerc (Acushnet, Mass./New Bedford) and junior Shelly DePina (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) tallied 13 kills each, freshman Melanie Appleman (Hyannis, Mass./Barnstable) registered 37 assists, and sophomore Jennifer Shaw (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) had 18 digs.

Wheaton travels to Smith College on Tuesday for a NEWMAC match at 7:00 p.m.
