Wheaton fends off Smith for second straight five-set NEWMAC victory
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's volleyball team needed five sets against a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent for the second straight match, as the Lyons fended off host Smith College Tuesday night during their 3-2 (25-17, 25-17, 19-25, 17-25, 15-11) victory in Ainsworth Gymnasium.
Already matching last year's league win total, Wheaton improved to 7-6 overall and 2-1 in the conference, while the Pioneers fell to 1-5 while remaining winless in three league matches.
Lyon senior Becca Rose (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) turned in a double-double showing with 37 assists and 11 digs. Freshman Jackie Jones (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) notched a team-best 15 kills, 12 digs and a team-high-tying three blocks, while sophomore Rachel Vergara (Needham, Mass./Needham) added nine kills.
Freshman Lindsay Tebbetts (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) tacked on six kills and three blocks, junior Emily Davisson (Carpinteria, Calif./Laguna Blanca School) put down five service aces with 11 digs, and senior Kristen Hunt (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) accounted for 19 digs. Sophomore Olanna Nissim (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) added 13 digs.
Smith freshman Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) finished with 18 kills, while junior Courtney Faria (Pocasset, Mass./Bourne) and senior Lauren Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Cortez) had 17 and 13 assists, respectively.
The Lyons step out of league play on Thursday for a home match against Salve Regina University at 7:00 p.m.
