Lyons drop pair to Kean and UMass-Boston in non-league matches
BOSTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to Kean University of New Jersey and host University of Massachusetts at Boston on Saturday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center. The Lyons lost 3-0 (15-25, 13-25, 14-25) to the host Beacons before falling 3-0 (23-25, 23-25, 24-26) to the Cougars.
Suffering its sixth and seventh straight losses, Wheaton falls to 8-13. UMass-Boston, which is receiving national votes by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), improved to 16-1, while Kean raised its mark to 12-13.
Against the hosts, freshman Jackie Jones (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) and sophomore Rachel Vergara (Needham, Mass./Needham) led the hitting attack with seven and six kills, respectively, while senior Becca Rose (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) recorded 16 assists.
Versus Kean, Jones and sophomore Christina Cannon (Milford, N.H./Milford) were credited with eight and seven kills, respectively. Rose tacked on five kills to go alongside her 25 assists and nine digs.
Vergara contributed five kills and seven digs against the Cougars, Hunt paced the defense with 12 digs, while Cannon and Davisson added five digs each.
The Lyons host Clark University in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
