Rhode Island College downs Wheaton in season opener, 3-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Lindsay Tebbetts (Gilmanton, N.H./Guilford) recorded seven kills for Wheaton College in a 3-1 loss to Rhode Island College Thursday night in non-conference women's volleyball action at The Murray Center.

Freshman middle hitter Marina Stoermer (Seattle, Wash./Shorecrest) began her Rhode Island College by notching 15 kills, eight digs and five blocks to lead the Anchorwomen to a win in head coach Elysce Tackmann's first match as head coach. First-year Wheaton College head coach Craig Letourneau, meanwhile, suffered a loss in his first match at the helm of the Lyons program.

Rhode Island College (1-0) jumped out to a hot start behind Stoermer's three kills in the first set, knocking off the Lyons (0-1), 25-15. Wheaton answered right back to win the second set, 25-22, knotting the match at one frame apiece. The Anchorwomen rebounded to win the final two sets, 25-12 and 25-15.

Defense was the key for RIC down the stretch as the squad recorded 15 blocks in the final two frames. In total, the Anchorwomen out-blocked the Lyons 24-9, with sophomore middle hitter Amanda Cabral (Riverside, RI/East Providence) recording nine of them. Cabral also finished second on the team in kills with seven.

Wheaton junior setter Olanna Nissim (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) dished out 24 assists in the loss while junior Rachel Vergara (Needham, Mass./Needham) recorded six kills. Classmate Christina Cannon (Milford, N.H./Milford) tallied five kills and six digs. Sophomore Kara-Jane Walker (Needham, Mass./Needham) recorded one block assist

Sophomore defensive specialist Harley Mitchell (North Smithfield, R.I./North Smithfield) led the Anchorwomen with nine digs, while junior outside hitter Breanna Boyer (West Greenwich, R.I./La Salle) and senior right side hitter Rachel Perry (Swansea, R.I./Joseph Case) each contributed six kills.

The Lyons return to action on Saturday when they host the Wheaton Invitational. They will face Emerson at 10 a.m., Western New England at 4:30 p.m., and Eastern Connecticut State at 7 p.m. RIC is back in action next weekend, as the Anchorwomen head to Waltham, MA for the Brandeis Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 9-10. They'll open up the tournament at 6 p.m. on Friday, September 9 against Little East Conference rival Eastern Connecticut.
