NORTON, Mass. – Sophomore Lindsay Tebbetts (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) recorded 16 kills and classmate Rachel Vergara (Needham, Mass./Needham) added 15 in Wheaton College's 3-2 win over Mount Ida in non-conference volleyball action Wednesday night at Emerson Gymnasium.
Junior co-captain Christina Cannon (Milford, N.H./Milford) added 13 kills and nine digs for the Lyons (2-8), who improved to 3-1 all-time against the Mustangs (4-4). Wheaton won the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-18, before dropping the third and fourth sets, 25-23 and 25-21, respectively. The Lyons roared back and won the fifth set, 18-16.
Junior Jennifer Ferreira (Shirley, Mass./Ayer) tallied a match-high 17 kills to lead the Mustangs while sophomore Emily Hutvagner (Beacon Falls, Conn./Woodland Regional) added 12 kills and 13 digs.
Tebbetts and Vergara each recorded seven kills in the opening two sets of the match for Wheaton while Cannon added five kills. Ferreira notched seven kills in sets three and four to help the Mustangs pull even at two sets apiece.
In the fifth and decisive set, sophomore Marguerite Copeland (Woodbrudge, Va./Oldfields School) threw down four kills to spark Wheaton while Cannon and senior co-captain Emily Davisson (Carpinteria, Calif./Laguna Beach School) each recorded four digs. Ferreira posted four kills for Mount Ida in the final set.
Davisson finished her evening with 15 kills while junior Olanna Nissim (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) dished out a career-high 46 assists. Senior Cody Fusco (San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco Walforf) and freshman Nicole Peixoto (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) combined for 34 assists for Mount Ida.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday when they travel to Mount Holyoke for a 1 p.m. New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest. The Mustangs host Saint Joseph's (Me.) and Suffolk in a tri-match on Saturday.
