SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - The Mount Holyoke College volleyball team rallied back after dropping the first set against Wheaton College to post a 3-1 win in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday afternoon at Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium.
Wheaton College captured the opening game, 25-22, before the Lyons rallied back to win game two 25-17, game three 25-19, and game four 25-23. The win marked Mount Holyoke's first over Wheaton College since 2006 and lifted its record to 3-2 (1-1 NEWMAC). The loss drops Wheaton to 2-9 (0-2 NEWMAC).
Sophomore Lindsay Tebbetts (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) paced Wheaton with 16 kills while three others - junior co-captain Christina Cannon (Milford, N.H./Milford), sophomore Marguerite Copeland (Woodbridge, Va./Oldfields School), and freshman Leigh Hunt (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) - each recorded four. Senior co-captain Emily Davisson (Carpinteria, Calif./Laguna Blanca School) recorded 26 digs, while junior setter Olanna Nissim (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) dished out 29 assists.
For Mount Holyoke, sophomore Martina Kneifel (Oro Valley, Ariz./Canyon del Oro) racked up 17 kills, 22 digs and four service aces. Freshmen Mollyanne Fitzpatrick (Round Rock, Texas/Hyde Park Baptist) and Alison Chu (Old Tappan, N.J./Northern Valley Regional) combined for 44 assists. Fitzpatrick finished with 27, while Chu added 17. Junior Kathryn Brummer (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) posted 10 kills, while freshman Kaleen Iwema (Wadsworth, Ill./Warren Township) piled up 29 digs.
Wheaton return to action on Tuesday when it hosts Smith College at 7 p.m. Mount Holyoke plays Coast Guard Tuesday at 7 p.m.
