NORTON, Mass. – Senior Amanda Duritsch (Troy, Ohio/Lehman Catholic) and sophomore Kellyn O'Brady (Garden City, Mich./Garden City) each recorded six kills to lead the Wellesley College volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Wheaton College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Tuesday night at Emerson Gymnasium.
The Blue won game one 25-11, game two 25-22, and game three 25-19 to move to 10-5 on the season (4-1 NEWMAC) and 34-2 all-time against the Lyons (2-15, 0-5 NEWMAC).
Duritsch paced the Blue to a .400 hitting percentage in the opening frame with five kills on seven attempts (.714). Sophomore Marguerite Copeland (Woodbridge, Va./Oldfields School) paced the Lyons with two kills while junior Olanna Nissim (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) recorded a pair of service aces.
In game two, O'Brady and classmate Julie Adams (South Pasadena, Calif./Crescenta Valley) each tallied four kills for Wellesley. Copeland and sophomore Lindsay Tebbetts (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) each notched a pair of kills for the Lyons, who also saw senior co-captain Emily Davisson (Carpinteria, Calif./Laguna Blanca School) and junior co-captain Christina Cannon (Milford, N.H./Milford) team up for 11 digs.
Freshman Caitlin Laughlin (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park Senior High) led the Blue in the third set with three kills while sophomore Kira Jordan (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Ramapo) came off the bench to notch four blocks (one solo). Cannon led the Lyons with three kills while Davisson had six digs.
"We played a very good team and a very big team tonight," said Lyons head coach Craig Letourneau. "We stepped up defensively and had our best showing of the year in that area. We were moving better and were really getting after it. At some point, you need to turn your defense into offense, and that's where we're still not aggressive. Our passing got better as the game went on, but I loved our effort defensively. We were getting a lot of blocks and dug a lot of balls. We really worked hard on the floor, which is something I like to see."
Copeland finished with five kills while Cannon, Tebbetts, and sophomore Rachel Vergara (Needham, Mass./Needham) each finished with four kills. Davisson tallied 13 digs while Nissim dished out 13 assists to go along with five service aces and three digs.
For Wellesley, Laughlin and Adams each finished with four kills. Junior Isabel Custodio (Powell, Ohio/Columbus Bishop Watterson) recorded 20 assists while junior Vivian Hu (Bellaire, Texas) posted a team-high nine digs.
The Lyons return to action on Friday when they face Bridgewater State and the University of New England at the 31st Annual Crabtree Classic at Eastern Connecticut State. The Blue travel to Tufts for a 7 p.m. match Wednesday night.
