WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - The Wheaton College women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss to Bridgewater State and a 3-0 loss to the University of New England on the first day of action at the 31st Annual Crabtree Classic, hosted by Eastern Connecticut State University, on Friday. The losses drop the Lyons to 2-17 on the season.
The Bears rallied back from a 25-16 loss in game one to win game two 25-16, game three 25-10, and game four 25-16. The Nor'easters won 25-18, 25-17, and 25-13.
Junior co-captain Christina Cannon (Milford, N.H./Milford) and sophomore Lindsay Tebbetts (Gilmanton, N.H.) each recorded eight kills against the Bears while freshman Leigh Hunt (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) added six. Junior Olanna Nissim (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) dished out 20 assists and senior co-captain Emily Davisson (Carpinteria, Calif./Laguna Blanca School) notched 19 digs.
Sophomore Kristen Robillard (Swansea, Mass./Joseph Case) paced the Bears with 16 kills while sophomore Taylor Beck (Marion, Mass./Old Rochester) added 12 kills and four blocks. Sophomore Melanie Appleman (Hyannis, Mass./Barnstable) handed out 32 assists.
Against UNE, Cannon and Tebbetts each tallied six kills while Nissim recorded 12 assists and Davisson registered 12 digs. Junior Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) led the Nor'easters with 12 kills, freshman Leah Janelle (Madbury, N.H./Oyster River) had nine kills, and sophomore Maria Kuehl (Middleton, N.H./Farmington) posted 15 digs.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday with matches against Worcester State at 1 p.m. and Eastern Connecticut State at 3 p.m.
