NORTON, Mass.- The Wheaton College women's volleyball team opened its own invitational with a comeback victory over Emerson College before dropping its next two matches against Western New England University and Plymouth State University on Saturday in Emerson Gymnasium.
After falling behind 2-0 to Emerson, the Lyons won the next three sets to defeat the Lions, 3-2 (22-25, 22-25, 25-20, 26-24, 15-10). Wheaten then fell to Western New England, 3-1 (16-25, 27-25, 21-25, 21-25) and Plymouth State, 3-0 (21-25, 18-25, 19-25).
Against the Golden Bears, freshman Deirdre Wilson (Aptos, Calif./Aptos) recorded a double-double of 12 kills and 21 digs. Classmate Arieanne Creighton (Brookline, N.H./Hollis Brookline) turned in nine kills, while senior Rachel Vergara (Needham, Mass./Needham) and freshman Kendall Jacobs (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) each had six.
First-year Robyn D'Agostino (Three Bridges, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) notched 13 digs, and freshman setters Page Gustofson (South Lake Tahoe, Calif./South Tahoe) and Jackie Kochiss (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) handed out 16 assists apiece. Jacobs led the Blue and White with three blocks.
In the night's final match versus Plymouth State, freshman Taylor Matook (Exeter, R.I./Exeter-West Greenwich) and Wilson led Wheaton's attack with five and four kills, respectively. Gustofson and Kochiss were credited with 10 and nine assists, respectively, Wilson added a team-best eight digs, while three other Lyons chipped in with four digs apiece.
Wheaton remains at home on Tuesday for a non-conference match against Rhode Island College at 7:00 p.m.
