Lyons Defeat Gordon at JWU Invitational; Fall to hosts

GAME ONE:

SCORE: Wheaton 3 – Gordon 1 (25-21, 25-14, 19-25, 25-20)

RECORDS: Wheaton (6-1, 0-0 NEWMAC) – Gordon (2-5)

LOCATION: Providence, R.I. (Wildcat Center)  

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • Claire Cansler finished 13 of Wheaton's 48 kills, while Julia Palomba put down 10. Cansler's 13 kills was a match-high.
  • Becca Houghton finished with 37 assists, while Cathryn MacGregor came up with nine digs, while Stephanie Martin pulled up eight and Houghton had seven.
  • Houghton led the team with two blocks, while Palmoba, MacGregor, Nikita Selivan, Cansler and Casey Dinga all had one.
  • A Cansler kill broke a 9-9 deadlock in the opening set, which sparked an 8-2 run by the Lyons which gave them the lead for good.
  • Wheaton came out strong in the second set, running up a 10-3 advantage, before winning the set 25-14.
  • Gordon responded in the third set, allowing Wheaton just one lead at the start on a Selivan kill.
  • The two sides battled in the fourth set with Gordon capturing an early lead. The Lyons battled back with help from back-to-back aces from Houghton, which gave them the lead for good.

  • Dinga and Cansler both ended the contest with four kills, while Allison Cox chipped in three and five other Lyons knocked down two.
  • Houghton concluded the contest with 14 assists, while MacGregor led the team with 12 digs.
  • Dinga ended the game with a team-high five blocks, while Houghton blocked three.
