Wheaton Defeats Bridgewater State 3-0; Fall to Gordon in Five Set Thriller

GAME ONE: 

SCORE: Wheaton 3 – Bridgewater State 0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-12)

RECORDS: Wheaton (9-2, 1-0 NEWMAC) – Bridgewater State (2-9)

LOCATION: Norton, Mass. (Emerson Gymnasium)  

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • Claire Cansler led all players with nine kills, while sophomore Cameron Mercer ended the contest with eight. 
  • Becca Houghton dished out a match-high 28 assists, while first-year Maggie Shafer came up with a match-high 17 digs for the Lyons.
  • Senior Allison Cox and Cansler finished with Wheaton's only blocks. 
  • With the opening set tied at 12-12, the Lyons closed out the contest with a 13-3 run behind solid serving from Casey Dinga and Houghton.  
  • The second set was a tightly contested back and forth, but an unassisted kill from Mercer ended the match in Wheaton's favor 25-22. 
  • The final set belonged to Wheaton from the start with the Lyons running out to a quick 8-2 advantage. The Lyons never trailed in the set and never allowed the Bears closer than three points.

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • Cansler led the Lyons with a team-high 16 kills, while Mercer also finished in double-digits with 11.
  • Houghton dished out a match-high 43 assists, while Cathryn MacGregor came up with a team-high 24 digs, while Shafer came up with 23. 
  • First-year Julia Palomba, Mercer, Casey Dinga, and Cansler each finished with a match-high four blocks for the Lyons. 
  • The opening set, set the tone for the match with neither team owning more than a three-point advantage. Trailing by one, 24-25, the Fighting Scots found a way to pull out the frame 27-25. 
  • The second set was more of the same with both sides trading possession of the lead. With the contest knotted at 24-all, the Lyons earned the win with a MacGregor kill and Fighting Scot error. 
  • Wheaton cruised through the third set, collecting a quick 25-11 victory, which featured four straight aces from Houghton. 
  • Gordon turned the tables in the fourth set, earning a 25-14 win. 
  • With the match deadlocked at 2-2, Wheaton opened the fifth set on an 8-3 run but had it erased after the side change. With the set tied at 10-10, the Fighting Scots edged out the Lyons with a 5-2 run to close the game.
