NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College Department of Athletics & Recreation has concluded its fifth Lyons Pride Team Challenge. This challenge is a competition between varsity teams in an effort to achieve the highest alumni rate of participation through giving to their sport through the Lyons Athletic Club (LAC).
For the fifth consecutive time, the baseball team won the challenge, with a record performance of 69.1% alumni participating. Coming in second, with the second highest giving total in the history of the contest, was women's basketball, with 49% of alums participating. Men's basketball (33.3%), swimming & diving (31.3%) and women's lacrosse (23.6%) rounded out the top five, all with record-setting participation from their respective alum bases.
"The growth of the Lyons Athletic Club over its 11-year history has been tremendous, especially over the past few years, as we have worked with Wheaton's Advancement division to grow and solidify the program," stated Director of Athletics & Recreation, John Sutyak '00. "We are extremely thankful to our alumni for seeing the value in investing back into their respective athletic programs and to provide our current student-athletes even better experiences that they had when they were at Wheaton.
Overall, the Lyons Athletic Club has a record of 401 gifts from alumni so far this fiscal year, which ends on June 30, 2018. The baseball team edged out the synchronized swimming program for the bonus prize of $500, which goes to the team that has the highest number of alumnae or alumni who make their first-ever gift to the LAC or a team.
