Question & Answer

What do you love about working at Wheaton College?

I was told when I was asked to do this to say, Kaylyn Smith.  That actually isn't too far from the truth.  I love our athletics staff!  Wheaton Athletics is poised to do some really great things, and I love to play my small part in our teams' and student-athletes' successes.  A short 30 years later, and for the most part, it still doesn't seem like work.  Our student-athletes keep me feeling young, and my two co-workers make it a joy to come to work every day.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

Family! When that isn't enough I love to sail, ski, coach my kids in basketball, and the Seattle Seahawks.

What was your path to end up at Wheaton?

Marriage for sure.  I was born and raised just outside of Seattle, Washington (Go Hawks!).  I didn't think I would ever leave the Pacific Northwest, then I got engaged to the love of my life, and she is from Sturbridge, MA.  I was working as an intern at the time for the Seattle Seahawks but had to find something full time once I put that ring on her finger.   With nothing in Seattle, I started looking on the other coast and ended up at Wheaton.

How do you enhance the student-athlete experience?

We provide an environment where our student-athletes are comfortable coming to us for everything from their injuries to conflicts they might be dealing with.  The profession has come a long way from taping ankles and passing out ice bags, and I enjoy the daily interactions with our student-athletes.

What is your most memorable memory at Wheaton?

30 years on the "job" there are so many.  Success will always be special to me.  The success of student-athlete experiences when they step back onto the field, court, track, or pool after spending months rehabilitating an injury with us.  I also like watching our teams succeed and advance from the regular season to postseason and the bids to the NCAA's.  I will always have fond memories of the 2012 World Series with Baseball, traveling with Softball to their World Series, going with Men's Soccer to the Final Four after a battle against Bowdoin that I didn't think would ever end, the shot by CWP (Cheryl Warren-Powers) to send Women's Basketball to the Final Four, and watching the pure dominance of our Women's Track team at outdoor Nationals year after year, after year!

Rapid Fire Questions

Favorite place to eat in Norton? Davis Spencer Cafe! A cup of chowder and half a chicken pesto sandwich every Friday!  Mac and Walts would be a close second.

Favorite event to attend at Wheaton College? The Awards Ceremony at the end of every year.  I find myself reflecting back at how talented our senior group was every time I watch them march up to get their blankets.

Favorite sports team? If you have to ask, you haven't been paying attention.  Go Hawks!  Seattle Seahawks!

Favorite place on the Wheaton College Campus? Outside on one of the fields for pre-season on a nice fall evening, the gym or pool once the weather turns cold, then back out for the spring season when the weather warms back up.  I guess, anywhere that our student-athletes are competing!

Favorite Movie? Patch Adams.  I think anyone that has seen the movie would notice some similarities with how I approach my job.  A bit of humor (even if they are old dad jokes) seems to make everything just a bit better, or so I hope!
