WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Junior Dan Gusovsky (Andover, Mass./Andover) plated senior Dan Demeo (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) with a sac fly in the bottom of the ninth inning to send the No. 16 Wheaton College baseball team to a 1-0 win over Webster University in non-conference action Sunday evening.
Freshman Apolinar De la Cruz (Providence R.I./Classical) led off the bottom of the ninth with a double to right center and was replaced on the bases by senior Dan Demeo (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury). Senior John Keating (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) stepped into the box and dropped down a bunt to push Demeo to third, but was safe on a fielders choice. Gusovsky - who left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth when he grounded into a force out - followed with a line drive to center that brought in Demeo for the only run of the game.
Senior David Longley (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) picked up the win in relief of sophomore starter Alec Palioca (Wrentham, Mass./King Philip). Palioca scattered six hits over 7.1 innings of work with two walks and two strikeouts. Longley, meanwhile, worked 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and fanned three of the five batters he faced.
Junior Sean Ryan (Norton, Mass./Norton) went 2-for-4 - including the Lyons (1-1) first extra base hit of the game leading off the bottom of the sixth. Junior Mitchell Bonds (Decatur, Ill./Kankakee CC) went 2-for-3 for the Gorloks (5-4).
Freshman Isaac Behme (Harrisburg, Ill./Harrisburg) pitched the first seven innings for Webster and allowed four hits and two walks while striking out four. Junior Steven Dooley (Oran, Mo./Florissant Valley CC) suffered the loss as he allowed two hits and one run in 1.2 IP.
The Lyons return to action Monday afternoon to face Anderson (Ind.) at 4 p.m. The Gorloks face RPI tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
