Landers three hits, De la Cruz's key RBI propel Lyons to 8-5 win over Anderson (Ind.)

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Senior Hal Landers (Salem, N.H./Salem) went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI as the No. 17 Wheaton College baseball team won their second game in less than 24 hours, defeating Anderson (Ind.) 8-5 in non-conference action Monday afternoon at the Central Florida Invitational.

Freshman Apolinar De la Cruz (Providence, R.I./Classical) also drove in two runs while junior Sean Ryan (Norton, Mass./Norton) went 2-for-3 with three runs scored for the Lyons (2-1), who pounded out 13 hits and scored in seven of the nine innings they batted.

With the game tied at five entering the seventh, Ryan drew a one-out walk, stole second, and came around to score on a single to center by De la Cruz. The Lyons tacked on an insurance run in the eighth when Landers recorded an infield single than brought in freshman Kevin Foley (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) on a throwing error by the SS, and another in the ninth on a double by De la Cruz.

Freshman Brian Mylett (Dorchester, Mass./Boston Latin) picked up his first-career win in relief as he allowed just one hit over 2.2 innings of work while striking out two. Sophomore Ryan Grant (Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) worked a scoreless ninth to record his first save of the season.

The Lyons opened the scoring in the first when Ryan's sac fly gave them a 1-0 lead. An RBI single by Foley in the second doubled Wheaton's lead before the Ravens pushed across a run in the bottom half of the frame, making it 2-1.

In the fourth, Landers dropped a triple down the left field line to bring in a pair and push Wheaton's lead to 3-1. Anderson tacked on a single run in its half of the inning to climb to within one at 3-2. Ryan led off the fifth with a triple and came in on a sac fly by senior Dan Haugh (Andover, Mass./St. John's Prep), but a two-run blast off the bat of Ravens senior Michael Tucker (Zionsville, Ind.) tied the game at five at the end of five.

Making his first collegiate start, freshman Mike Gibbons (Simsbury, Conn./Avon Old Farms) allowed three hits and four runs while walking six in five innings of work. Anderson freshman starter Nick Nunez (Winona Lake, Ind.) was knocked around by Wheaton, allowing nine hits and six runs with three walks and three strikeouts in seven innings.

Foley finished the afternoon 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while senior John Keating (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Freshman Jeremy Shelmadine (Fort Wayne, Ind.) had two hits for Anderson.

Wheaton is back in action Tuesday morning with a 9:30 a.m. contest against St. Joseph's (Maine). The Ravens (4-3) play Ripon tomorrow at 9:30 a.m.
